Lahore Shah Jamal Greens triumph in 18th National Seniors Cup Cricket Tournament

(KarachiCliffNews): Lahore Shah Jamal Greens overpowered Lahore Spartanz by 15 runs in their Northern Zone encounter of the 18th National Seniors Cup Cricket Tournament 2016-17 at the Shah Faisal Ground in Lahore. Put into bat, Lahore Shah Jamal Greens posted a healthy total of 266 for five in the allotted 30 overs. Opener Irfan Suleman started the onslaught with 32-ball 53 which contained four sixes and five fours. The 127-run third wicket stand between Mohammad Nadeem and Azeem Aslam allowed them to consolidate their position. Mohammad Nadeem smashed three sixes and 10 fours in his 90 off 69 balls while Azeem Aslam hit one six and seven fours in his 70 off 59 balls. Left-arm spinner Hafiz Wasim (2-40) was the pick of the Lahore Spartanz bowlers. Chasing a target of 267, Lahore Spartanz got off a sensational start as openers Zaheer Iqbal and Tahir Saeed added 127 for the first wicket. Tahir Saeed was a little more aggressive of the two, clobbering two sixes and nine fours in his 89 off 58 balls while his opening partner blasted two sixes and 11 fours in 60-ball 79. Lahore Shah Jamal Greens bounced back through the duo of medium-pacer Imran Haider (3-30) and off-spinner Alamgir Hussain (2-33) as Lahore Spartanz finished at 251 for eight off 30 overs, which was 16 runs short of their target, despite a late blitz from Amjad Khan who bulldozed six boundaries in his breezy unbeaten 32 off 15 balls. A record number of 111 teams from all parts of the country are contesting the tournament, being organized by the Pakistan Veterans Cricket Association (PVCA) for the eighteenth year running. A total of 210 matches are due to be held this season with the National Final, to be contested between the champions of Northern Zone and Southern Zone, in Lahore next month.
