Irfan Salman, Majid Saeed hit centuries in 18th National Seniors Cup Cricket Tournament

(KarachiCliffNews): Irfan Salman and Majid Saeed hammered centuries in the Northern Zone matches of the 18th National Seniors Cup Cricket Tournament 2016-17 having got underway simultaneously at the various upcountry centres of the country. Irfan Salman powered Shah Jamal to 122-run victory over Hannan Enterprises at Shah Faisal Ground, Lahore, while Majid Saeed’s unbeaten knock guided Gujranwala Blues to eight-wicket victory over Mubarak Seniors at VIP Ground, Sialkot. In another match Gujrat Seniors overpowered Gujranwala Seniors by 17 runs at Zahoor Elahi Stadiu, Gujrat. A record number of 111 teams from all over of the country are participating in the tournament, being organized by the Pakistan Veterans Cricket Association (PVCA) for the 18th year running. A total of 210 matches are due to be held this season with the National Final, to be contested between the champions of Northern Zone and Southern Zone, in Lahore on January 29, 2017. Opener Irfan Salman whacked six sixes and 16 fours in his 132 off 70 balls as Shah Jamal posted an awesome total of 280 for eight in the allotted 30 overs. Hannan Enterprises, in reply, lost wickets at regular intervals to be bowled out for 158 in 27.3 overs with leg-spinner Hafiz Saeed (3-11) being the pick of the bowlers. The Gujranwala Blues left-arm spinning trio of Iftikhar Ahmed (3-37), Aurangzeb Khan (2-31) and Kamran Baig (2-35) sent Mubarak Seniors to 191 all out in 30 overs despite Abrar Gilani’s 61 off 48 overs. Majid Saeed’s unbeaten 100 off 82 balls containing one six and 17 fours allowed Gujranwala Blues to reach the target of 192 in just 21.2 overs with eight wickets in hand. Put into bat, Gujrat Seniors posted a total of 224 for five off 30 overs with Mateen Ashraf (58 off 30 balls), Ata-ur-Rahman (48 off 54 balls) and Shoaib Faisal (44 off 29 balls) being the main scorers. Gujranwala Seniors replied positively but lost their way in the end to be bowled out for 207 in 28.1 overs. Mohammad Ilyas (56 off 47 balls) was their top scorer as the innings was rocked by left-arm spinner Gulzar Ahmed (3-61) and medium-pacer Amjad Ali (2-28).
