GILGIT(Cliff News)The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan organized a two-day “Gilgit-Baltistan Trade Show 2016” in Serena, Gilgit from 9th to 10th August, 2016. It featured forty (40) exhibitors, including nearly a dozen women entrepreneurs, whose products ranged from gemstones and jewelry, handicrafts, and organic agri-products showcasing a variety of local honey, produce and apple cider vinegar.The event was visited by hundreds of eager locals, hotel guests and visiting senators from the Standing Committee on CPEC. Senator Siraj-ul-Haq and local officials were given tours of the exhibition, and expressed how impressed they were with the quality of products, especially those being displayed by women entrepreneurs.
Local government officials also visited the stalls, and praised the quality of organic products and the sheer quantity of gemstones on display.
On day two of the event, a comprehensive conference was held to discuss the export potential of Gilgit Baltistan, featuring speakers from the Department of Agriculture, Agha Khan Rural Support Programme, Ruhani Foundation, local consultancies and representatives of International Donars. The chief guest of the conference, Dr. Muhammad Iqbal, Minister for Works, Gilgit Baltistan commented how pleased he was to see such a wide variety of products on display and the sheer number of women entreprenuers. He added that the recent progress on CPEC meant more trade for the region, as Gilgit Baltistan is determined to invite Chinese manufacturers to start production in the area, along with easing visa restrictions from Chinese tourists.
Local non-governmental organizations and non-profit organizations proposed future collaboration with the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, especially in the field of mineral certification, international exhibitions and seminars to impart knowledge and skills to rural farmers.The exhibition of this kind was praised by the inhabitants of GB as a concerted effort to bring the entrepreneurs of this region to the limelight and imparting in them the confidence to compete at international trade market.
